Depression is one of the most common psychological disorders in the world. RED GINSENG is used as a traditional drug in traditional Chinese-medicine in order to boost overall health, minimize the central nervous system (CNS) disorders such as depression. In this experimental study, we investigated the antidepressant-like effect of RED GINSENG ROOT extract in male mice weighing 25-30g using the forced swimming test (FST). In this study, the percolated extract of the ROOT was used. Six groups of mice were used. The first group is control .The second group received fluoxetine (10 mg/kg/day).Four other groups were treated with one of the doses of ROOT extract (25, 50, 100, 200 mg/kg/day) by intraperitoneal injection for five days. Immobility time was measuRED by the forced swimming test (FST). Five groups treated with fluoxetine and extract of RED GINSENG ROOT had significantly shorter immobility times compaRED to the control group (p<0.05). These results demonstrated that RED GINSENG had significant antidepressant-like effect in vivo. The activity of RED GINSENG in anti-depression may be mediated in part through uptake inhibition of serotonin in mice brain.
